First discovered by the great Duke Ellington in the early 60’s, Abdullah Ibrahim, aka Dollar Brand, is a fantastic jazz pianist and composer who is originally from South Africa. The history of his country, which sent him into exile, and that of its people, liberated only recently from the scourge of apartheid, helped to create his music. Imbued with South African, classical and Eastern tonalities, this sound is at once jazz and be-bop, in the tradition of Randy Weston or Thelonious Monk. Some of you may also have discovered Ibrahim in France, or on the soundtracks of Claire Denis’ films Chocolat and S’en fout la mort. This accomplished musician has alternated between Cape Town, New York and Europe for many years, and here he will be performing as part of a trio, presenting his spiritual, refined, pure jazz. Not to be missed, this legendary, luminous, extraordinary artist in an exceptional concert.
