Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Björn Schmelzer – Rosas and Graindelavoix

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, the prodigal daughter of Belgian dance and the founder of the famous Rosas company, created her last piece around the idea of nightfall. The piece was entitled En Attendant (Waiting) and the choreography took place in real time, from twilight to darkest night. This creation goes in the opposite direction. To conceive it, the choreographer chose to work with the musician Björn Schmelzer and his ensemble, Graindelavoix. Nineteen dancers and singers explore their limits onstage: the dancers sing and the singers dance. This unexpected exchange of roles allows the artists to create a dialogue, masterfully fueled by the 14th century scores of Ars Subtilior, which are performed live. This music of the Middle Ages is known for its refinement and its rare polyphonic complexity. It affects and influences the dancers’ movements, their trajectories sculpted by the moving lights and colours of the stage, seeking the same precision and virtuosity.
