Peter De Bie and Ief Gilis – Cie Laika and Circo Ripopolo

A sensory theatre which speaks directly to your taste buds: this is Cucinema, jointly proposed by the Laika and Circo Ripopolo companies. The first company’s specialty is transforming theatre stages into venues for food tastings. You enjoy small plates and meet the chefs, the director, Peter De Bie, is what is called a culinary artist. The second company takes you into the warm, relaxed fun of the circus, directed by someone who loves good food, Ief Gilis. Mixing these two temperaments is explosive: you are no longer at the theatre but in a kitchen, you are no longer watching a performance but smelling and tasting, while watching the preparation of the dishes being served. Watching what happens as the food arrives on your plates, what accompanies the process, it’s a wonderful, disorganised ballet. In a piano-bar ambiance, this chaos sometimes trips up well-rehearsed sequences, so it is not surprising to see bottles flying into the air.
