by René Clair – music Erik Satie, Christoph Ehrenfellner with the Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse – musical direction Enrico Calesso
The genesis of the film Entr’acte is reflected in the spirit of dada which circulated freely in the 1924 Paris art scene: ordered from René Clair by Francis Picabia, who wanted to project a cinematographic divertissement, to music by Erik Satie, during the intermission of his ballet Relâche. The names of the pieces were chosen with the humour and mystification typical of the dada movement… An homage to the burlesque, the film’s story begins as a crazy scientist immobilises Paris with a diabolical ray gun. A series of surrealistic scenes brings together Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp playing chess, and Francis Picabia and Erik Satie igniting a cannon. A memorable burial ceremony includes a hearse harnessed to a camel, funeral wreaths made of brioche, typically dadaist details and situations which could also have appeared in the works of Tristan Tzara or Louis Aragon. Remarkable for the stunning beauty of its images, for its irony and subtlety, Entr’acte made René Clair a great Parisian poet. In its first playing, the film will be accompanied by the music which Erik Satie wrote for its creation. A second version will include the original images of René Clair, but it will be accompanied by music by Christoph Ehrenfellner, the young composer in residence in Mulhouse. Both scores will be performed by the musicians of the OSM who will also play the overtures to Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.
