Hard to be a god

by Kornél Mundruczó and Yvette Bíró

The ruthless theatre of the young genius Hungarian director and filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó deals with the people on the margins of humanity, presenting characters who are “monsters,” an exceptional selection of actors who reveal the brutality of this world. Mundruczó is inspired by a novel by the brothers Strugatsky, creating for us a society which declines its responsibility for some of its worst actions, such as human trafficking. The blunt, provocative characters, the enthralling yet horrible story, the sets make Hard to be a god a special kind of unrelenting reality show which invites the spectator to observe -- himself. Five men have kidnapped some prostitutes and are holding them in two trucks. Hoping for a better future, they have all given up their freedom. They have made up their own rules for the little kingdoms defined by the four walls of the trucks. One of the actors becomes a sort of witness, following this journey into hell. Intense, spectacular, Hard to be a god is a piece like no other, an experience which will leave an indelible mark on the life of each member of the audience.
