Sex in the (Arab) City
Lotfi Achour, Anissa Daoud
This piece is a real treat, full of humour and irony, as expressed in its subtitle: Sex in the (Arab) City, an allusion to the well-known American television series. Between channel surfing and sex ed classes, documentary films, love songs, dramas and parodies, the authors literally lift the veil on Love in the Arab-Muslim world … It is a recurring, somewhat anachronistic theme: Arab imagination, which they say is perhaps overly sentimental, has referenced it for centuries, through its many poets as well as the bloggers of today. It starts off like a talk show, with three men and two women, and Love and Sex are presented to us, interspersed with moments of shifting, drifting, hallucinating, skidding and swerving. Endearments are whispered or chanted. Sexual suggestions and comments, too, hard-core, raw, direct.
Hobb Story dares to break taboos, taking on ingrained prejudices and closed minds – redrawing the shape of a new lovers’ bedlam.
