Toméo Vergès – Cie Man Drake

In this new work, Toméo Vergès puts various kinds of idiocy onstage and in the end it is the absurdity of human behaviour which is revealed. His idea is that idiocy is shared by everyone, as opposed to common sense, because idiocy is restricted to human beings, in areas where reason stumbles. A piece set somewhere between dance and theatre, where we hear, “The world began with a marriage but it will end in incontinence.” This is one way of dealing with the derisory nature of human destiny and making fun of those taking it way too seriously. Five clever performers drive the action, a sort of playground for lobotomised adults. Giant ashtrays, plants and office furniture are seized upon, to be used in ridiculous, sometimes stupid and always hilarious poses. In just a few minutes, you see the beginnings of beatific smiles on the audiences’s faces, the smile of someone who is delighted to be there.
