after Anton Tchekhov – Armel Roussel
There is absolutely no doubt, the director Armel Roussel is in complete osmosis with the hero of Ivanov, the play. The piece he has created, based on Chekhov’s Ivanov, is an intimate face to face confrontation between a theatrical character and a contemporary artist. And what is said onstage is, as it happens, quite relevant to us. Armel Roussel explains: “It’s strange, we rarely speak about the meaning of what we do, even less about who we are. As if we were afraid of something, perhaps of going mad? And yet I am sure that all of us carry this question, this anxiety inside of us – and that it might be good to speak to each other about it … Why do I need to understand everything? It’s like love. I don’t understand much about that, how about you?” Ivanov would have said pretty much the same thing, he, who once grown, looks back at the life he has lived and can no longer bear, trying to run away from it into drunkenness, conversations of no interest and one night stands. The famous Russian playwright understood much of the human soul. Ivanov Re/Mix speaks to us, disturbs us with its scorching relevance.
