Thomas Lebrun – Cie Illico
Here is a dance work which seems to run contrary to current trends. Thomas Lebrun, the creator, envisages this creation as “a reflection of and a perspective on romanticism in contemporary society and the choreographic art of today.” A piece for seven dancers and a string quartet, La jeune fille et la mort (Death and the maiden) returns to the source of the myth which inspired Franz Schubert’s sublime work, filled with grace and unspoken pain. Around young Anne-Sophie Lancelin, dancers of several generations travel through time and styles, delineating the trends and major developments in contemporary dance. Soaring around a bare stage divided by sharply angled lighting and chiaroscuro, they move through space and time, accompanying the young girl in her successive battles. There is no real death here but many sequences of mourning: the end of childhood, the despair of a break-up, the pain of aging – this piece revisits the fundamental stages of life, with the melancholia and subtlety that characterises the work of Thomas Lebrun.
