after Imre Kertész – Bernard Bloch
Anyone who has ever held in his or her hands the book Être sans destin (Fatelessness) by Imre Kertész, will never be the same after reading it. The Hungarian writer, who received the Nobel Prize for literature in 2002, was sent as a teenager to the Auschwitz concentration camp, then to Buchenwald, and afterward wrote an extraordinary, painful book about his experiences. He is also the author of the extremely powerful Le Chercheur de traces (The Pathseeker), which Bernard Bloch has adapted for the theatre. In his piece we follow the journey of a man seeking information about a horrible event which happened twenty years ago. His quest is a loaded one, filled with questions: what remains from so long ago? What memories do we have of the horror that took place? What traces remain of that which once was? The answer can perhaps be found in the filmed images closely intercut with the actors’ work, making this piece into a true piece of ciné-theatre. On the screens we see blades of grass or bits of barbed wire separating fields and prairies. But these blades of grass are not randomly chosen, they are from Alsace, near Struthof, the only concentration camp placed on French soil during WWII. 22,000 people were deported and then murdered there – and this is the reality which the piece brings to us, giving us the possibility of escaping our stunned paralysis – and doing something about it.
