Many Chaplin fans consider his film The Kid to be his most personal and finished work, one in which the proportion of laughter to tears was the most successful. Both sentimental comedy and pure melodrama, with magnificent performances from Jackie Coogan as the Kid and also Chaplin himself, playing an extraordinarily eloquent Charlot. This character, recurring over seven years after the release of the film in 1921, shows us his entire social and humanistic range. Charlot the hobo, who this time has a little place to live, finds and takes in an abandoned baby. They live and play and commit minor misdemeanors together until the child is five, when he gets sick … The score for Le Kid, written by Charlie Chaplin, will be performed in this exceptional cine-concert by the Symphony Orchestra of Mulhouse. The first part of the programme will consist of the overture-fantasy to Tchaikovsky’s Roméo et Juliette, a major composer in the romantic repertory.
