Pascale Murtin and François Hiffler – Grand Magasin

For more than twenty-five years, the ambassadors of the absurd known as Grand Magasin have created pieces that cannot be categorised. Pascale Murtin and François Hiffler are bootleggers of the stage, con men who play with everything the theatre can offer them to hijack their rules. Their pieces are like UFOs, unique, joyful, untouchable. Les Rois du suspense (The Kings of suspense) is a challenge to the laws of performance, a dialogue in which the two protagonists ask each other questions about surprise and suspense, then announce: “You tell us in advance, you ruin the surprise, you spoil the intrigue, you screw up the work, you blow the plan, you give up the punch line, you spill the beans, you can’t keep a secret, you telegraph the end, you show your hand… sure, you’re absolutely the kings of suspense.” And yet the mystery continues…

25 chansons trop courtes

When she woke up after having fallen off a bicycle, Pascale Murtin wrote 564 poems. Their great number is offset by their brevity. For her, the rabbit hides in satin, loses its Latin and stumbles frequently on certain vocabulary words. Later she got the idea of making songs out of these poems, minimal, mumbled, hummed, here are 25 chansons trop courtes (25 too short songs) (running 20 - 50 seconds) which she sings, accompanied by her faithful accomplice François Hiffler.
