Back to the classic of classics, then: freeze! What would it be like to revisit the famous tragedy, translating it into contemporary language, in which the playwright’s words will dialogue with the music as well as with the image and its inexhaustible capacity for illusion? Can we betray Shakespeare just a little in order to really do him justice? How about if Hamlet were a super hero with exceptional powers? This is what the La Cordonnerie company, which has created this wacky cine-spectacle, has chosen as its starting point. Hamlet, a naive young man, must avenge the murder of his father and reestablish the truth in Denmark, this kingdom where “something is definitely rotten.” This funny, screwball play and its multiple effects gives the Ghost a body, does send poor Ophelia to the convent while hanging onto her rag dolls, and fights duels with forks and knives. And of course Hamlet is now (super) Hamlet. Yet it is Shakespeare himself who speaks, his genius and his fantasy reaching even the youngest audiences’ ears.
