after Les Misérables by Victor Hugo – Jean Bellorini
You need a lot of nerve to adapt Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, to take on the reigning master of 19th century literature, the apostle of romanticism and prose. Jean Bellorini misses nothing with his powerful, purifying approach to the work. The musicality and rhythm of the text inspired him to create several “slammed” passages, put others to music. The actors each play several roles, changing voices frequently, sometimes speaking in unison, fully deploying onstage the power and eloquence of the author: Cosette, Jean Valjean, the Thénardiers, Gavroche, the sewers of Paris and the coming French Revolution, all of it takes shape before our eyes, led by a theatre company unlike any others, confident, spectacular, belligerent yet joyful.
