Ivan Favier and Bert Van Gorp – IF Cie & Cie Contrecœur

Dancers are like soccer players. Athletes, after they reach a certain age, well, the body just doesn’t work as well, it has given so much and now must begin its graceful exit. It is stiff, less flexible, and odd pains crop up. But they are still worth watching: their generosity more than making up for slight changes in virtuosity, technicity giving way to an astonishing grace. Ivan Favier and Bert Van Gorp, between them a hundred years old – decided to call their piece Two Old Men. Not that they’re really that old, but they are certainly aware of their limits. This duo “ciné-dance” plays off their so-called weaknesses, anticipating their future stumbles, allowing us to glimpse their inevitable fading, thinking about their own fathers at this age. There is no self-pity whatsoever in this regenerative duo, just two old friends, still dancing to Purcell or the Velvet, with as a sort of wallpaper, a film of them, shot a few months earlier at La Filature, in which they go at it, full out, dancing, dancing.

Production IF Cie. Coproduction La Filature, Scène nationale – Mulhouse. With support from the Ballet of the National Opéra of the Rhine, CCN Mulhouse under the auspices of the accueil studio programme 2011 / Le Grand Jeu, Bouxwiller / L’L – venue for research and accompaniment for emerging creators / the Ministry of Culture and Communication – DRAC Alsace / the Cultural Agency of Alsace – artistic accompaniment under the auspices of the Régionales and accueil en résidence / the Alsace region / the city of Mulhouse. With support from Adami / the Fondation Alliance – Cairpsa Carpreca / the General Council of the Haut-Rhin (others TBA). This piece was created following residencies at La Filature in July 2010 and October 2011.

 

Dance workshop
To accompany the creation of their piece Two Old Men, Ivan Favier and Bert Van Gorp will teach a workshop.

> Friday 21 October from 7:00 -10:00 PM, and Saturday 22 October from 10:00 AM to noon and from 2:00 to 5:00 PM
